Most recently, HVK successfully commissioned its 35th system featuring patented nitrogen oxide emission reduction technology, which can reduce these greenhouse gases to nearly zero levels. This process converts environmentally harmful nitrous oxide (N₂O) and other nitrogen oxides into nitrogen, oxygen and water. With the latest installation at Arxada in Switzerland, annual nitrous oxide emissions will be reduced by at least 98%, enabling annual savings of up to 600,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. This has made a significant contribution to the country's climate targets.

We are focusing on developing sustainable solutions that make existing and new plants as environmentally friendly as possible – extending all the way to fully climate-neutral chemicals such as green ammonia.

Originally developed for emission reduction at nitrate plants, this technology has been installed at 35 chemical plants worldwide since its first deployment in 2003. Additional systems have been ordered by various customers and will be installed and commissioned in the coming months. Since one kilogram of N₂O in the atmosphere has the same global warming impact as 265 kilograms of CO₂, the current global N₂O emissions reduced by all installed systems amount to 16 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year. For comparison: this equals the annual CO₂ emissions of more than 9,400 small passenger vehicles. To date, cumulative emission reductions have exceeded 200 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, accounting for more than 25% of Germany's annual CO₂ emissions.
